Hoje tive o prazer de dar a aula
“Alfaias, samplers, and bass as weapon”
na turma de @bonaventurendikung e Manuela García Aldana,
na Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin.

Partimos da Alfaia não apenas como instrumento musical, mas como tecnologia territorial: um objeto sonoro que organiza corpos no espaço, produz coordenação coletiva e carrega memórias de resistência. Em diálogo com samplers e linhas de baixo, discutimos o som como infraestrutura material e política, que disputa espaço, tempo e atenção.

A aula atravessou o Manguebeat, práticas afro-diaspóricas e eletrônicas, e leituras críticas do design e da técnica, pensando instrumentos, meios digitais e frequências graves como estratégias espaciais: modos de ocupar, tensionar e reconfigurar territórios, físicos e simbólicos.

Foi um encontro maravilhoso, marcado por trocas generosas e perguntas que seguem reverberando.
Gratidão à turma e, em especial, a Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung e Manuela García Aldana pelo convite e pela abertura para pensar o som como prática situada, coletiva e insurgente.

Today I had the pleasure of giving the class
“Alfaias, samplers, and bass as weapon”
to the students of Prof. Dr. Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and Manuela García Aldana
at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin.

We began from the alfaia not only as a musical instrument, but as a territorial technology: a sonic object that organizes bodies in space, enables collective coordination, and carries memories of resistance. In dialogue with samplers and bass lines, we discussed sound as a material and political infrastructure that contests space, time, and attention.

The class moved across Manguebeat, Afro-diasporic and electronic practices, and critical approaches to design and technology, thinking instruments, digital media, and low frequencies as spatial strategies: ways of occupying, tensioning, and reconfiguring territories, both physical and symbolic.

It was a wonderful encounter, marked by generous exchanges and questions that are still resonating with me.

I'm thrilled to share my participation in the book Barbarian Currents: Half a Century of Brazilian Media Arts, brilliantly edited by Gabriel Menotti (Queen's University) and Germán Alfonso Núñez (UNICAMP). The publication was made possible through the support of the Canadian SSHRC, the Brazilian FAPESP, and Queen's University Library and Vulnerable Media Lab.

"Barbarian Currents covers more than 50 years of Brazilian media arts through the voices of some of its main actors. The volume adopts a sociological perspective, grounding itself in the somewhat stable concept of Brazil (8.5 million km2! 210 million people! five world cups!) to navigate the considerably messier boundaries of media and technological arts. Each section is punctuated by an introduction that briefly contextualizes this history against the socio-economic reality of the country. Most of this material is published in English for the first time. If you ever needed a sourcebook on postwar Brazilian media arts, my anglophone friends, now you have it!" - Gabriel Menotti
